2011 Volvo C70 T5
Form And Function All In One

The C70 debuted for the 1998 model year as a fixed-top coupe and a soft-top convertible, and began a new model-naming system for Volvo, with C denoting the coupe, while 70 represents the car’s position in the company’s product line. The coupe was dropped in 2003 but the C70 convertible continued for the 2004 model year before taking a hiatus in 2005.
The 2011 C70 is taken to a new level of design and performance and I have to say, it certainly isn’t just the Professor’s Volvo any longer. The 2011 model continues with the safety and comfort one expects from Volvo but it now ads the flair of Pininfarina styling, featuring the open-air rush of a convertible with the sporty styling of a coupe.
While there will always be purists that want a convertible with the soft top, Volvo’s iteration is one of the best and most natural looking hard top convertibles on the market – taking only 30 seconds to transform from the sleek coupe to a wind-in-your-hair open road cruiser. And although listening to your favorite music in a convertible can be problematic, Volvo’s 900 Watt, 12 Dynaudio speakers make for great sound any time.
The standard Sovereign Hide soft leather seats are classic Scandinavian design created by Bridge of Weir, a company recognized world wide. The cockpit is both beautiful and comfortable. Volvo addressed the problem of security with the top down by installing lockable storage spaces for personal items – a very nice touch.
Although the C70 is far from a hot rod, the 5-cylinder Turbocharged engine mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission seamlessly pumps out 227 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque which is more than sufficient. The engine’s ability to respond at low RPM is made possible by continuously variable valve timing and electronic engine control systems along with the light pressure turbocharger and dual charged intercoolers. The C70 is classified as a ULEV-II vehicle with an EPA rating estimates of 19/28.
When it comes to handling, the C70 is smooth and secure with Volvo’s Electo-Hydrolic steering, which affords perfect feedback from the road, and it even allows for the rear wheels to turn just enough to make you feel as though you’re gliding around corners. The McPherson struts up front and multi-link independent rear suspension along with DSTC, Dynamic Stability and Traction Control keep the C70 solid on the road and a pleasure to drive. Power assisted anti-lock brakes with ventilated front discs and Electronic Brake Distribution between the front and rear brakes help ensure short stopping distances in any emergency.
Safety has always been the hallmark of Volvo, and the 2011 model continues with safety improvements but also is working to help drivers while doing no harm to the environment. Many Volvo innovations provide a healthier interior environment by using only materials that meet international standards, and all leathers used are chromium free.
Bottom line, with pricing starting at under $40,000 the Volvo C70 convertible offers a lot for the money. Along with the safety you’ve come to expect from Volvo, you now actually get some panache. So if you’re looking for the best of both worlds, a coupe and a convertible, check out the Volvo C70. I think you’ll like it as much as I did.
