Garden With Your ChildrenInvite Your Children into the Garden

Now is a great time to plan to get together as a family and promote the healthy values of gardening and good food. Not only can you connect with your kids in a new way, it provides exercise and awareness of healthy food choices that can be grown in your own backyard.
“With nearly one third of children in the United States overweight or obese, there has never been a better time to start than this new growing season to promote a solution to this nationwide epidemic,” says Jeffrey Restuccio, author of Get Fit Through Gardening.

Get Fit GardeningAmong the many benefits Restuccio cites:

Get in to the garden with your kids and get fit and healthy, one tomato at a time.

Summer Reading Programs
summer readingStudies have shown that when children stop reading, even for a few months, they experience significant declines in their literacy growth as compared to those children that read year round. Summer Reading Programs are a fun, rewarding way to keep students reading and strengthen their literacy skills.

Phoenix Public Library kicks off two summer reading programs June 1. Both programs, designed to encourage kids and teens to read during their summer break, feature exciting prizes and run through July 31.
“Extra! Extra! Read Your Way to the Ballpark” is a countywide reading program co-sponsored by the Arizona Diamondbacks and The Arizona Republic. Children up to age 18 can earn prizes by reading 50 pages or listening to a book being read for 20 minutes. Readers who finish the program win a children’s book for their home library and also earn a bonus prize − a ticket to a Diamondbacks’ game. For more information, visit phoenixpubliclibrary.org/kids.
Teens, ages 12-18, can also win exciting prizes by participating in Phoenix Public Library’s “Make Waves at Your Library” summer reading program. The summer bookprogram is entirely online and features instant and weekly prize drawings and a grand prize drawing for an eMachine Netbook. Beginning June 1, teens can register, log their reading and submit book reviews at phxlib.org/teenreading.

Scottsdale Public Library also kicked off its summer reading program on June 1. There are programs for babies, youth, teen and adults – all of which have some terrific prizes along the way. Stop into any Scottsdale Library Branch between June1 and July 31 to sign up. It’s free, it’s fun and it’s an essential part of summer. For more information, visit library.ci.scottsdale.az.us.
