In an effort the help keep the community clean and beautiful by keeping keep lead, mercury and other harmful materials out of its landfills, Ventana Academy, in partnership with Westech Recyclers, will hold an electronics recycling day on May 8 from 7am-2pm at the Academy.
Items being accepted include computers, laptops, monitors, printers, network cards, routers, hard drives, floppy and CD-ROM drives, copiers, fax machines, telephones, cell phones, test equipment, wire and cable, power supplies, circuit boards, video game equipment, calculators, typewriters, stereo equipment, credit card machines, etc. – basically, anything with a plug.
The event will be held at the Academy, 6424 East Cave Creek Road (corner of School House and Cave Creek Roads). Horizon Musicians Selected For 2010 All-State Honor Band

Horizon High School announced that six members of the Horizon Band and Orchestra auditioned for the Arizona All-State Honor Band and Orchestra, and with hundreds of students auditioning, two Horizon band students were selected and will represent not only Horizon but also the Paradise Valley School District.
The student musicians selected for the All-State Honor Band are Meredith Jackson on flute and Andy Pettit on percussion. They joined other student musicians from across Arizona in a performance at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff on April 17.

Club Announces 2010 Youth of the Year

Christian Rodriguez, Youth of the YearChristian Rodriguez, a junior at Coronado High School, was selected as the 2010 Youth of the Year for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale. Rodriguezreceived a $5,000 scholarship and each of the seven runners-up received a $1,000 scholarship from General Dynamics C4 Systems.
The Youth of the Year program has been an integral part of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America for more than 60 years and is the highest honor given to members of the organization. Finalists are chosen based on their dedication to the Club, community and family, academic performance, moral character, life goals, leadership, poise and public speaking ability.
As the 2010Youth of the Year from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale, Rodriguez represented the organization at the state competition held on April 13. The state winner advanced to the Pacific Region competition, where five regional finalists will vie for the national title of Boys & Girls Clubs of America 2010 Youth of the Year.

North Canyon Choir To Perform At Carnegie Hall

North Canyon Advanced Women's Choir

The Advanced Women's Choir from North Canyon High School has been invited to perform at the Heritage Festival at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Only select choirs, bands and orchestras are invited to perform in this world-renowned venue during the Festival.
Over the past year, thousands of students from hundreds of schools have competed for the opportunity, which showcases the best music ensembles from around the country.
Under the direction of Joyce Bertilson, the ensemble was awarded a Gold rating for a superior performance during the Anaheim Heritage Festival, earning them an invitation to perform at Carnegie Hall in 2011 or 2012.
