Tech Games Offer Scholarships and Networking

Challenges mirror real-world scenarios for college students

Registration for Avnet, Inc.’s sixth annual Avnet Tech Games is fast approaching – as early as February 11 from some of the competitions. The event, taking place on April 9 and expecting to draw more than 160 students from Arizona’s community colleges and university, is presented by Microsoft. Each winning student will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
The Avnet Tech Games is a collaborative effort by Arizona educators and technology companies to help the state’s two- and four-year college students acquire valuable skills needed to thrive in the modern workplace. At the Arizona onsite Avnet Tech Games, students compete to gain hands-on and practical experience in addition to the academic curricula they receive in the classroom. The event will feature eight multidisciplinary technology competitions that require students to test their knowledge, creativity, decision-making, problem-solving and technical skills.
Participating students will have the opportunity to attend a networking hour, where they can connect with event sponsors and executives from companies such as Microsoft, Accenture, AMD, RedPrairie, Jobing.com, Sprint, Tel Tech and Verizon. Avnet Tech Games scholarships are provided thanks to the generosity of the Carstens Family Funds.

PVschools Community 5K Run
Horizon High School will play host to the PVschools Community 5K Run on Saturday, February 12 beginning at 7:30am.
The event will be chip-timed by All Arizona Running Events, with awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers, male and female, in each age division: 11-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70+. Pre-registration (adults, $10; children 15-19 years old, $5; children 14 and under, free) is available through February 4 at Active.com or AllArizonaRunningEvents.com. T-shirts provided to the first 500 registered participants. Late registration (adults, $15; children 15-19 years old, $5; children 14 and under, free) is from February 5-11 online, or day-of registration available at Horizon High School. There will also be free fun slides and children’s activities, bands, pep squads and information booths. Water and healthy snacks will be available for runners.

Pardes Taking To The Road For “Panther Classic”
Pardes Jewish Day School students, staff, parents and community will be bike riding, walking and running in the inaugural Panther Classic, an effort to raise funds for the school’s sports programs. The calorie-burning fun starts at Pardes, 3916 East Paradise Lane (40th Street south of Bell Road), at 9:30am on Sunday, February 13.
“The Panther Classic gives our students, families and all from the community who want to participate a chance to be Pardes trailblazers,” says Coach Derek Zappa, the school’s athletic director.
The day’s races include a 28-mile bike ride (starts at 9:30am), and a three-mile fun family bike ride/run/walk (10:30am). Participants can even bring their roller blades. For a small entry fee, participants get the event shirt. Kosher food will also be available for the hungry athletes and fans, and there will be a raffle for a new bike and helmet.
